Jake Evans, the Trump-endorsed candidate in the Republican primary runoff election for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, criticized his opponent Rich McCormick’s stance on the 2nd amendment on The John Fredericks Show on Tuesday.
“[McCormick] is backed by special interest groups. AMA is one of them, the American Medical Association. If you look at their website they are clear. They are a liberal organization. Make no bones about it,” Evans said.
Indeed, the American Medical Association (AMA) gave McCormick’s campaign finance committee, Friends of McCormick, a contribution of $2,500 in 2020.
“In my opinion, we’ve got to protect our Second Amendment. We’ve got to support our law enforcement. That’s the type of true, unafraid, America First fighter/constitutional warrior that the 6th district is yearning for and needs,” said Evans.
In the past, the AMA has recommended a ban on handguns and a waiting period for all firearm purchasers, as well as restrictions on weapons, among numerous other gun-control policy recommendations.
“I’m a constitutionalist. To me, we have to be very very careful eroding back our constitutional provisions. I think we can get into a slippery slope where we gradually erode away the distance of the very provisions we see we’ve got to protect. We have got to make sure that we’re making mental health a big issue. I mean, at the end of the day it’s not guns that kill people, it’s people that kill people,” said Evans.
When asked by Fredericks about his position on the bill presented by Adam Kinzinger to raise the gun buying age to 21 after the Texas school shooting, Evans identified mental health as a key problem to tackle.
“There are many, many adolescents I think throughout our country that are in troubled situations and that’s where faith comes in, making sure we’ve got a nuclear family, making sure we’re getting back to the Christian values that our country was based on. That solves a lot of the problems America is facing and we need to put that front and center and deal with it throughout our schools and society,” he said.
Fredericks asked Evans if he has the will to make any changes to gun laws in light of the Texas school shooting in Uvalde.
“Right now; no. I am not in favor of rolling back the Second Amendment. I do think that we need to ensure we’ve got superfluous and enough police officers that are at schools maintaining the safeness of the campuses, and making sure we’ve got the school resource officers who are also maintaining the safety of the campus,” said Evans. “Those are big issues that we’ve got to ensure that if something like this happens, it’s quickly addressed and it’s put to an elimination, but as far as rolling back the Second Amendment we’ve got to protect that.”
Evans clarified that his intent is not ad hominem attacks on his opponent, rather, he wants 6th-district constituents to know the facts.
“I’m not here to just attack him. The voters deserve to know the truth. The fact of the matter is this race comes down to a swampy failed politician and a bold, unafraid conservative that has been on the front lines fighting for the conservative cause my entire life,” said Evans.
